Transparent Settings

IRender nXt has two settings for Transparency. Thin - Thick and Caustic . These settings are available on the Edit Material Wizard - in IRender nXt mode and/or as Object Properties

Thin / Thick

Bowl and Pyramid maked as thin (default). (They wil work better if marked as thick)
Bowl and Pyrmid maked as Thick

There is a Thin/Thick setting for glass. Thin turns of the refractive effects of transparency. It should be used with planes of window glass made with a single face rather than two faces to indicate thickness.

Thick is used for thick panes of glass made from two faces and solid objects like this bowl or cone. Thick processes reflection and refraction better.

SketchUp transparent glass will be rendered as Thin, as the default, unless the transparent material is marked as thick in the Material Wizard , or the face or object containing the glass is marked Thick as an Object Property .

These scene is illuminated with a spotlight. Note that without the Caustic setting, objects which are highly transparent do not cast appreciable shadows.


A caustic is the envelope of light rays reflected or refracted by a curved surface or object, or the projection of that envelope of rays on another surface.

The Caustic effect produces focused light and shadow effects from a point light.

Note: Caustic does not currently work with the Sun for illimination.
